Creative Consistency & Daily Discipline
"If you can't fly - run.
If you can't run - walk.
If you can't walk - crawl.
No matter what it takes - keep moving forwards."
— Martin Luther King
I sincerely appreciate this quote.
From having spent months building my momentum, working daily, creating daily - I'll occasionally allow myself to take time out.
Sometimes, in the right amount - it can be good to get a decent break.
But other than that - if left for too long - it can cause stagnation and stifle my ability to get back into a rhythm when I have the desire and intention to get back to my work - but not the motivation.
An idea that I like is - if you make yourself sit down, for even just five minutes, to approach your work in some way that you are drawn to - if you can just make a start - you might want to continue...
And if you continue - you might find your flow...
It's like tricking yourself into being creative - and not waiting around for inspiration, luck or opportunity - but instead - getting on with creating these things for yourself, 5 minutes at a time.
Sometimes - those five minutes you promise yourself may feel like 5 hours.
Other times - you might not realise that five hours have just flown by...
There's a saying:
"If you are persistent, you will get it.
If you are consistent, you will keep it."
I find that I crave my own discipline - and I love the fact that I have built this into my day - my life, my rituals - even before I began to build my early morning routine.
I think it's most important just to show up.
Even when we don't feel like it, or when we are not motivated, or when we doubt ourselves - that we still show up and do something.
Anything will do...
I think that by having the resilience and tenacity to approach your work every day - in some way, no matter what - even if it is to take just the tiniest of steps forwards - it is important to take that step.
What about you?
Do you tend to 'ebb and flow' or do you manage to put the daily practice in no matter what?
